Why an ice bath in Bali needs a chiller, not bags of ice

Water comes out of a Bali tap at 28–30 °C, and a 350-litre tub in the shade absorbs heat from the air all day. Twenty kilos of ice drops that tub by roughly 4–5 °C and is gone within two hours; a plunge you actually use needs a machine. An ice bath chiller in Bali is sized against three things: the tub volume, the target temperature and the number of people who will get in per hour. A ½ HP chiller holds a single 300–400 litre villa tub at 8–15 °C with a lid on; a 1 HP chiller takes the same tub to 3–8 °C, or holds 10 °C when four or five surfers cycle through it after a session at Batu Bolong. Pull-down from 30 °C to 8 °C takes 6–9 hours with ½ HP and 3–5 hours with 1 HP, so the chiller runs on a timer overnight and the tub is ready by 06:00. Tub, liner, filtration: how we build a cold plunge for Bali

The tub body is larch or thermowood staves on a stainless-banded frame, with a food-grade liner inside so the wood never sits in standing water; teak is beautiful but heavy and expensive, and we reserve it for clients who ask for it. The plumbing loop runs tub, skimmer, cartridge filter, circulation pump, chiller, return jet, with an ozone or UV stage after the filter so the water stays clear for weeks between changes rather than days. A drain with a slope in the deck takes the water away when it is changed, which matters on rice-field plots in Pererenan and Seseh where a 400-litre dump onto the lawn is not popular with the neighbouring farmer. Outdoors, the tub gets a hardwood lid and a shaded position; the chiller stands within 3 m on a level pad with clear airflow and, on the coast from Berawa to Bingin, a monthly rinse of its condenser fins against salt.

Power, water and placement from Canggu to Ubud

The chiller is the easy load. A ½ HP unit draws about 0.5 kW and a 1 HP unit about 1 kW, plus a 100 W circulation pump, so a cold plunge in Bali runs on any 2,200 VA or larger supply with no PLN upgrade; the circuit still gets its own breaker and an ELCB because water and electricity share a deck. Running cost at daily use is typically IDR 300,000–700,000 per month, mostly the chiller holding temperature through the afternoon. Water supply can be tap, well or tanker; well water on the Bukit around Uluwatu and Ungasan carries minerals that shorten filter life, so we fit a pre-filter there.

Placement is usually next to the sauna or on the pool deck, so hot and cold sit within ten steps of each other; in Ubud jungle villas the tub goes under the roof overhang because leaf fall clogs a skimmer within days. A dry sauna plus plunge is the set most villa owners end up with, and the price list shows the two together.
