The Bukit peninsula is the fastest-changing corner of the island after Canggu. Villas around Bingin, Padang Padang and Uluwatu are built for the view and for the surf, which means they cling to the cliff edge, share a single concrete lane with a dozen neighbours, and in the case of the original Bingin beach houses are reached only by stairs. Newer estates in Pecatu, Ungasan and Balangan sit on flat ground with proper road access and are simpler. Listings on the Bukit compete on wellness features more openly than anywhere else on the island, with sauna and ice bath appearing in villa descriptions as standard, so most owners here ask for the set: a sauna and a plunge, placed so the plunge catches the sunset.

Space is rarely the issue; power and access are. We build Bingin saunas as panels no heavier than two people can carry down 80 steps, assemble on the terrace, and keep the electrical run short. Where the meter cannot be raised, a compact infrared cabin with a 1 HP plunge is the honest package, and it is what we installed at a cliff villa above Bingin last season, described on the project page.

Water, wind, power and access on the Bukit

Water first. Much of the Bukit runs on wells drilled into limestone or on tanker deliveries, and both are hard and slightly saline. For a cold plunge in Uluwatu we fit a pre-filter ahead of the cartridge filter and change cartridges more often; for a steam room we add a softener so the generator does not scale up. Wind is the second factor: the cliff edge is breezy and salt-laden, which dries wood fast and corrodes anything not stainless, so cabins get a roof, a windward wall without glass and fixings in stainless throughout. The upside is that the Bukit is a touch drier than Canggu, and outdoor cabins here suffer less from mould.

Power on older villas in Bingin and Padang Padang is often 2,200–5,500 VA; newer estates in Pecatu and Ungasan usually have 7,700 VA or three-phase. A 6 kW heater needs 7,700 VA and the upgrade is the owner's application and cost, so many cliff villas choose the infrared cabin at 1.7–2.4 kW and put the money into a 1 HP chiller that holds 5 °C. Access decides the schedule: deliveries to stair-only villas go in the cool of the morning with a four-person carry crew, and the survey notes the number of steps, the width of the narrowest turn and where the pickup can park.
