What makes a dry sauna work in Bali's humidity

A dry sauna in Bali fights the climate every day it is switched off. At 80–90 % relative humidity, moisture moves through untreated timber and settles in the insulation, and a cabin built the way it would be in Europe grows mould behind the cladding within 2–3 years. So we build every wall as a sandwich: an exterior panel, 50 mm rockwool, an aluminium-foil vapour barrier taped at every joint, a 20 mm ventilation gap, and then the interior cladding. The foil stops steam from reaching the insulation; the gap lets the cladding dry from behind.

Interior wood is western red cedar, Scandinavian spruce or thermowood, with benches in aspen or abachi that stay cool to the skin at 90 °C. Local hardwoods such as ulin and bengkirai are excellent outside, for decking and thresholds, but we do not use them inside a hot room. Ventilation is built in as a pair: a supply vent low near the heater and an exhaust high on the opposite wall, so the cabin breathes while it runs and dries out afterwards. Along the coast, from Berawa to Pererenan and down to Bingin, every screw, hinge and heater guard is stainless steel, because salt air corrodes zinc-plated hardware within a season.

How big should a custom sauna in Bali be, and what power does it need?

Most villa owners ask for a four-person cabin, about 2×2 m, with a 6 kW heater. Two-person cabins at 1.5×1.2 m run a 3.6 kW heater; six-person cabins at 2.4×2 m take 8 kW; an eight-person room at 3×2.4 m needs 9 kW. Above that, 10.5–12 kW heaters for retreat and studio saunas run on three-phase supply. Every cabin ships with an 8 mm tempered-glass door, a heater guard and a bucket-and-ladle set, and we hand over only after a test heating with you in the room.

Electricity is the first thing to check, before wood or size. A 3.6 kW heater runs on a 5,500 VA supply. A 6–9 kW heater needs 7,700–11,000 VA, which for many villas in Umalas, Seminyak or older parts of Sanur means a PLN upgrade from 2,200–5,500 VA; the owner applies for and pays the upgrade, and we specify the exact capacity on the quote. The heater gets its own circuit in heat-resistant SiHF cable, a dedicated breaker and an ELCB. Where an upgrade is impossible, an infrared sauna at 1.7–2.4 kW is the honest alternative.

Sauna installation across Bali: Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu and the islands

The cabin is built in our workshop near Canggu while your site is prepared, then delivered as panels. Indoor cabins in Berawa, Umalas and Sanur usually go into a spare room, a pool house or a converted garage and take 2–4 weeks on site including electrics. Outdoor cabins on rice-field plots in Pererenan or on jungle terraces in Ubud get a raised base, a roof with an overhang and a small porch for towels; these are covered on the custom and outdoor sauna page. Cliff villas around Bingin and Uluwatu with stair-only access are fine, because nothing we deliver is heavier than two people can carry.

Heaters are imported Harvia, Sawo or Tylö units with 1–2 years of factory warranty and spare parts held on the island; the structure carries our own 2-year warranty. Running cost for a villa sauna used four or five evenings a week is typically IDR 200,000–500,000 per month at PLN rates.
