Steam room

Steam room builder in Bali: 45 °C, 100 % humidity, no leaks

Tiled 40–45 °C steam rooms with a proper slope, drain and generator, for villas, spas and hotels.

A steam room from Sauna Canggu is a waterproofed, mosaic-tiled room held at 40–45 °C and near 100 % humidity by a 6–9 kW steam generator. It suits Bali villa owners who prefer wet heat, and spas and hotels in Seminyak, Ubud and Nusa Dua. Indicative price IDR 50–100 million (approx. USD 3,000–6,100) for a 2×2 m room; 3–5 weeks to build.

What a steam room in Bali involves, and why waterproofing comes first

A steam room in Bali is a wet room first and a wellness room second. At 40–45 °C and close to 100 % humidity, every surface streams with condensate for as long as the generator runs, and in a climate that is already at 85 % the room next door will show mould within a year if anything leaks. So the build order is fixed: a cement-board or block shell, a continuous liquid membrane over floor, walls and ceiling, a floor that falls to a drain at 1–2 %, a ceiling sloped at 10–15 % so drips run to the wall instead of onto shoulders, and only then the mosaic. The door is 8 mm tempered glass with a stainless frame and a threshold that keeps the water in. A mechanical exhaust dries the room after each session; without it the grout goes black in months.

Steam comes from a 6–9 kW generator in a service cupboard next door, feeding a nozzle low in the corner with an aroma dosing point. Benches are tiled and heated by the room itself; a curved bench costs more than a straight one and is what most villa owners in Berawa and Umalas ask for.

Steam generator power and water supply for a steam room in Bali

The generator is the electrical load. A 6 kW unit for a 2×2 m room needs a 7,700 VA supply; 9 kW for a larger or glass-walled room needs 11,000 VA; anything commercial runs on three-phase. Older villas in Seminyak, Kerobokan and Sanur commonly sit on 2,200–5,500 VA, so a PLN upgrade, applied for and paid by the owner, is usually part of the plan. The generator gets a dedicated circuit in SiHF cable, its own breaker and an ELCB, and a drain for its blow-down cycle. Where an upgrade is impossible, wet heat is not available and an infrared cabin is the fallback.

Water matters as much as power. Well water on the Bukit around Uluwatu and Ungasan, and much of the town supply, is hard; scale builds in the generator tank and shortens the element's life. We fit a softener or scale filter on the feed as standard and schedule a flush every one to three months. Running cost for a villa steam room used four or five times a week is typically IDR 300,000–600,000 per month.

Villas, spas and hotels: where we build steam rooms across Bali

Villa steam rooms in Canggu, Berawa and Seminyak usually replace or extend a bathroom, share its drain, and take 3–5 weeks including tiling. Spa and hotel steam rooms in Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Ubud are larger, run 12–16 hours a day, and are priced from IDR 150 million with a 9 kW or three-phase generator and a duty-rated exhaust; timelines run 4–8 weeks. We also renovate existing steam rooms whose membranes have failed, which is common in villas built in the 2000s, for IDR 15–50 million depending on how much of the shell has to come out.

Many owners pair the steam room with a cold plunge in the same wet area, sharing the drain and the service cupboard. The price list shows steam rooms next to dry saunas so the two can be compared on cost and running expense.

Frequently asked questions

Can a steam room go on an upper floor?

Yes, with a membrane that turns up the walls by at least 20 cm, a drain tied into the floor below and a leak test before tiling. We do this in Seminyak townhouses regularly; the extra cost is mostly in the drainage run.

Steam room or dry sauna for a Bali villa?

If guests are the audience, a dry sauna is the more searched-for amenity and cheaper to run. If the owner prefers wet heat or the space is already a bathroom, the steam room wins. Both need 7,700–11,000 VA for a full-size room.

How often does the generator need servicing?

A flush every one to three months depending on water hardness, and a descaling of the tank yearly. The softener cartridge is changed every six months. We offer a maintenance visit schedule for villas that are managed remotely.
