Buying an ice bath in Bali: ready-made tub or custom chilled plunge?

Published 2026-09-308 min

If you plan to use cold water more than a few times a month in Bali, a tub without its own chiller turns into a daily ice run: taking 300 litres of 29 °C tap water down to 10 °C takes roughly 60–65 kg of ice before the afternoon heat starts pushing it back up. A custom plunge with a chiller (IDR 45–90 million installed, about USD 2,700–5,500) holds 3–15 °C around the clock. Ready-made tubs still make sense for occasional use, short stays or a trial.

What you can actually buy in Bali

Search results for "ice bath Bali for sale" or "buy cold plunge Bali" mix four very different things, and the price gap between them only makes sense once you separate them.

  • Inflatable or foldable tubs. Light, cheap, no cooling of their own; you fill them and add ice.
  • Rigid insulated tubs without a chiller. Better at holding cold than a foldable tub, but still cooled with ice.
  • Plug-in tubs with a built-in chiller. Freestanding units sold complete; they cool themselves, but the chiller, filter and drain are whatever came in the box.
  • A custom built-in plunge. A timber tub with a liner, a separate ½–1 HP chiller placed in shade, filtration with ozone or UV, a drain and its own circuit. This is what we build.

We do not quote other sellers’ prices here; they change often. What stays constant is the physics of 30 °C water, and that is where the options separate.

The ice arithmetic in 30 °C water

Each kilogram of ice absorbs about 334 kJ while melting, plus a little more as its meltwater warms to the tub temperature. Water gives up 4.19 kJ per litre for every degree it cools. Put those together for a typical one-person tub of 300 litres filled from a 29 °C tap:

TargetHeat to removeIce for the first pull-down
12 °Cabout 21,400 kJabout 55 kg
10 °Cabout 23,900 kJabout 64 kg
6 °Cabout 28,900 kJabout 80 kg

That is before the tub starts gaining heat from 32 °C afternoon air, the sun on the deck and each bather. Without insulation and a lid, the water climbs back within hours and needs topping up. For a weekly session that is manageable; for a daily routine or a rental villa with guests in and out, it is a logistics job every single day.

What survives 30 °C water, salt air and UV

Bali is hard on anything that sits outside. Thin PVC and fabric tubs fade and weaken under equatorial UV. Mild-steel frames and fittings rust quickly near the coast in Berawa, Seseh, Bingin and along the Sanur beachfront. Chillers lose capacity when their condenser fins scale with salt or when they are boxed in without air. A custom plunge answers those points with a lined timber tub on a stainless frame, a hardwood lid, a chiller on the shaded side with free air around it, and a monthly rinse of the condenser. The same logic runs through our salt-air build guide.

Hygiene: the part a tub without filtration skips

Warm-climate water without circulation turns cloudy fast, and a tub cooled only with ice usually has no filter at all, so it is drained every few days. A plunge with a pump, cartridge filter and ozone or UV stage keeps a household tub clear for weeks between changes, and every avoided refill is also an avoided pull-down from 28–30 °C. For a rental villa, that difference decides whether staff can look after the plunge at all.

When a ready-made tub is the right call

If you are in Bali for a few weeks, rent a place without a drain or a spare circuit, or simply want to find out whether cold water becomes a habit, a ready tub and a few bags of ice is a sensible experiment. If the routine sticks, a chiller can often be added to a rigid tub later: we fit chillers to existing tubs for IDR 25–55 million after checking the wall thickness and the lid.

What a custom plunge from us includes

A lined larch or thermowood tub, a ½–1 HP chiller placed in shade, pump, filter and ozone or UV, pipework to a drain, a dedicated circuit with breaker and ELCB, and a temperature pull-down test with you before handover — IDR 45–90 million, 1–2 weeks on site. Details are on the ice bath page, running costs and noise in the chiller guide, and every line against the cabins on the price list.

Frequently asked questions

Can you add a chiller to a tub I already bought?

Often, yes. We check the wall thickness, insulation and lid first; a thin uninsulated tub wastes most of the cooling. Chiller-only installs run IDR 25–55 million.

How long does a custom plunge take to install?

One to two weeks on site, mostly plumbing, the drain and levelling. It is faster if the pool deck already has a drain and a spare circuit.

Is a plug-in chilled tub enough for a rental villa?

It can be for light use. The questions to ask are whether it has real filtration, whether its chiller copes with a sunny 32 °C deck, and how easily staff can drain and clean it between guests.

What does a chilled plunge cost to run in Bali?

Typically IDR 300,000–700,000 a month for daily use at residential PLN rates, lower with a lid, shade and a 10 °C set point.
