Outdoor sauna
Outdoor sauna for Bali villas: cabins built for rain, salt and sun
A roofed timber cabin for the garden, pool deck or rice-field edge, raised off wet ground and fixed in stainless. Built by the Canggu crew behind 100+ Bali projects, IDR 80–150M, with a free survey first.
An outdoor sauna in Bali is a free-standing timber cabin with its own roof, raised base and small porch, heated to 70–90 °C by a 6–9 kW heater and built to stand in monsoon rain, salt air and equatorial sun. Indicatively IDR 80–150 million (approx. USD 4,800–9,100) including roof, deck and porch, and 1–2 weeks on site once the panels leave the workshop.
What makes an outdoor sauna work in Bali
Four things decide whether a garden cabin still looks right after three wet seasons. The roof comes first: a proper pitched or mono-pitch roof with a 40–60 cm overhang and drip edges above the door, so monsoon rain never runs down the cladding and the midday sun never sits on it. The base comes second: concrete pads or a hardwood frame that lift the floor clear of standing water and termites, with nothing wooden touching the soil. Third is hardware: along the coast from Berawa to Seseh and on the Bukit, salt reaches every hinge, so screws, hinges, handles and the heater guard are stainless. Fourth is the wall itself, the same five-layer build we use indoors — panel, rockwool, foil vapour barrier, vented gap, cladding — because an outdoor cabin is cold and damp between sessions far more often than an indoor one.
Where it stands: garden, pool deck or rice-field edge
- Pool decks in Pererenan and Cemagi. The classic spot, with the plunge two steps away. We add a steel sub-frame so the cabin load spreads across the deck joists.
- Garden compounds in Umalas and Kerobokan. Shade from mature trees helps, leaf litter does not; the roof gets a gutter and the door faces away from the heaviest drop.
- Cliff terraces above Bingin and Uluwatu. Wind and salt are constant and access is often by steps, so panels are sized for a two-person carry; see Uluwatu and Bingin builds.
- Jungle terraces in Ubud. The dampest air on the island: a generous overhang, a raised base and a heater that runs a short drying cycle weekly in the wet season.
All timber, or a glass front?
An all-timber outdoor cabin — thermowood outside, cedar inside, a small window in the door — is the simplest and most forgiving build: it holds heat well, needs the smaller heater for its size and sits at the lower half of the IDR 80–150 million range. A glass front turns the cabin towards the view and photographs beautifully, but it loses more heat, needs shading from the overhang and adds glazing cost. Both are built on the same base and roof. Designer glass-front work is covered on the custom luxury sauna page.
Power, cabling and the plunge beside it
A four-person outdoor cabin runs a 6 kW heater, which needs a 7,700 VA supply; an eight-person cabin runs 8–9 kW and 11,000 VA. The PLN upgrade, where needed, is applied for and paid by the owner; our part is the trench, heat-resistant SiHF cable, a dedicated breaker and an ELCB. Most owners add a chilled cold plunge beside the cabin, and it is cheaper to lay its circuit and drain in the same trench than to come back six months later.

Frequently asked questions
Can the cabin sit on an existing timber pool deck?
Usually, yes. We set it on a light steel sub-frame so its 400–500 kg is spread across the joists and rinse water drains away instead of soaking into the deck. The survey checks joist spacing and the fall of the deck first.
How long does the timber last outdoors in Bali?
Long, if the roof, the raised base and the fixings are right. Cladding under a 40–60 cm overhang stays dry through the wet season; what fails first on cheaper cabins is unprotected steel, which is why every screw and hinge on ours is stainless. An oil finish on the outside is renewed every year or two.
Does an outdoor sauna need a permit?
A small free-standing cabin on a villa plot is normally treated as a garden structure, but rules differ by regency and zoning, so check with your notary or permit consultant. We supply drawings, dimensions and the electrical specification they ask for.
What does it cost to run?
With a 6–9 kW heater used four or five evenings a week, typically IDR 200,000–500,000 a month at residential PLN rates. A lid-less plunge beside it adds IDR 300,000–700,000.
